Division machine | late 1600s, Baron Gottfried Wilhelm von Leibnitz. (divide/multiply) |
Loom with punch cards | early 1800s Joseph Marie Jaquard; weaving looms that used holes punched in cards to control the pattern, he was not trying to invent computer, his ideas helped others. |
"difference engine" | 1832; Charles Babbage "Father of Modern Computing" first general-purpose mechanical digital computer. |
Analytical engine | (also C. Babbage) could be programmed and had memory. too far ahead of his time; later inventors used his ideas |
First programs | 1853;Ada Byron (countess of Lovelace) supported Babbage. She suggested he use punchcards in looms. Also wrote programs for analytical engine. |
Cenus Machine | 1890; Herman Hollerith- used punch cards to count information collected in 1890 census. Started company which later became IBM |
