Weather-chapter 13

clouds, precipitation, fronts

QuestionAnswer
very high wispy clouds- made from ice crystals cirrus
low fluffy clouds cumulus
low flat clouds that cover most of the sky stratus
mid-level fluffy clouds altocumulus
low flat clouds that bring precipitation nimbostratus
It may begin as rain, but the ground is below freezing. freezing rain
the temperature is below freezing in the cloud and the temperatures remain below freezing all the way down. snow
this travels through a cumulonimbus cloud, where layers of ice may build up until it is too heavy to remain in the cloud. hail
two things necessary for clouds to form cooler temperatures reaching to dew point and a particle to cling to.
The process of water vapor cooling and becoming a liquid form, creating clouds. condensation
warm and humid air masses maritime Tropical
cold and dry air masses continental Polar
air masses are described by two things. temperature and humidity
when two air masses collide, but do NOT mix fronts
these fronts stall because one air mass can not move the other- brings many days of rain stationary fronts
warm air masses overtakes and rises above a cold air mass- usually brings warm humid air warm front
the amount of moisture in the air humidity
percentage of water vapor in the air, compared to the actual amount there. relative humidity
this storm can bring heavy damages with flash flooding, strong winds and lightning strikes. thunderstorms
this storm usually developes in thick cumulonimbus clouds and is a rapidly whirling funnel-shaped cloud. tornado
most tornadoes occur here, where cold air masses from Canada meet warm, humid air masses from the Gulf of Mexico. tornado alley
this long-lasting storm is fueled by warm tropical water evaporating and can have strong winds. hurricanes
clouds are classified by what 2 things? altitude and shape
fronts are classified by what 2 things? temperature and humidity (cold/wet)
how warm weather will change after a cold front comes through? it will rain, then cooler, drier air will come.
What will result when clouds are above freezing, the air is also above freezing, but the ground is below freezing. freezing rain
What will result if the cloud is below freezing, but the air is above freezing? sleet
What will result if the cloud is below freezing, and the air is below freezing? snow
this prefix/suffix means precipitation is probably coming nimbo/nimbus
this prefix means "high", but are really mid-level clouds alto
this prefix means "VERY high" cirro
used to measure relative humidity psychorometer
someone who studies and forecasts weather: may use weather baloons, barometers, theromometers, radar, satellite images. meteorologist
a dome of water that occurs during hurricanes, that brings flooding. storm surge
thunderstorms may bring what dangers? rain, thunder, lightning, flash floods and tornadoes
What causes hurricanes to lose strength or "die out"? moving to land - there is no warm water to keep evaportating and fueling the storm.
Where is the best place to be for a tornado? a storm shelter, basement or a room with no windows.
rain that freezes as is falls sleet
rain that freezes after it touches the ground freezing rain
this begins as frozen water vapor, and NEVER melts snow
What causes hurricanes to develope? The sun's energy causes warm water to evaporte along the areas near the equator; as the warm most air rises, it cools and oondenses, bringing wind and rain.
a violent disturbance in the atmosphere created by sudden changes in air pressure storm
the temperature at which water vapor changes to a liquid dew point
this type of front will bring warmer, humid air and may bring some rain/snow warm front
this type of front will bring cold, drier air and heavy rains/snow cold front
this front has two cold air masses pushing up a warm air mass and cutting it off. occuluded front
