Shape variations
Question | Answer |
---|---|
Poikilocytosis | Increased variation in the SHAPE of RBCs. |
Ovalocytes/Elliptocytes | Oval, egg-shaped, elongated, or cigar-shaped RBCs. |
Spherocytes | Non-biconcave RBCs. Round or spherical, stain intense orange-red due to lack of central pallor. |
Target Cells (Leptocytes) | RBC that looks like a bulls eye target. Peripheral ring of hemoglobin, a ring of pallor/clearing, and central area of hemoglobin. |
Shistocytes | Fragmented RBCs less than one half the normal RBC volume. |
Spiculated RBCs | RBCs with scalloped, spicular, or spiny projections that are regularly/irregularly spaced. Echinocytes, Burr Cells, Acanthocytes, Dacryocytes, Stomatocytes, and Keratocytes. |
