Key Supreme Court cases you need to know.

QuestionAnswer
Marbury v. Madison (1803 Legally established the concept of Judicial Review. Pres. John Adams appoints William Marbury along with 40 other "Midnight Judges." Under Jefferson's presidency, James Madison was not authorized to hand over the judicial commission.
McCulloch v. Maryland (1819) Established that Congress had the power to create a national bank. Famous for establishing the power of the federal government over the state government. The state bank of Maryland wished to tax the National Bank. The National Banks's manager, McCull
Gibbons v. Ogden (1824) Establish federal power over both state and corporate power when dealing with interstate commerce. Ogden had a monopoly in NY and NJ along the Hudson River. Gibbons had federal approval to operate a steamboat as well. Gibbons won the right to operate
Dred Scott v. Sandford (1857) Established that slaves were property rather than U.S. citizens (which lead to the 14th Amendment's creation of birth right citizenship) and held that the property rights of slave owners even in "free territories" of the federal government.
Worcester v. Georgia (1832) The state of Georgia passed a law stating that white persons could not live among the Cherokee Indians. Samuel Worcester, a missionary, was arrested and sentenced to prison. Chief Justice John Marshall ruled that the individual states had no authority
