PTA Competency MMT
PTA 1st Yr Clinical Competency MMT
Motion Tested | Patient Position | PTA Position |
---|---|---|
Shoulder Flexion | Short sitting end of table w/arm outstretched in front (90 degrees), elbow slightly flexed, & forearm pronated (palm facing down) | Test: Stand behind & to the side of patient, apply resistance w/hand above elbow joint; other hand stabilize shoulder |
Shoulder Abduction | Chair sitting (patient too tall to get good leverage) with arm abducted to 90 degrees; elbow slightly flexed. | Test: Stand behind patient. Apply resistance w/hand above elbow joint; other hand stabilize shoulder |
Shoulder external/lateral rotation | Prone; head turned toward test side. Towel under arm for 90 degree angle; hang arm off side of table. (raising back of hand up toward head) | Test: Stand to the side of patient & apply resistance w/two fingers @ wrist; other hand supporting under the elbow/arm |
Shoulder internal/medial rotation | Prone; head turned toward test side. Towel under arm for 90 degree angle; hang arm off side of table. (raising palm up toward feet) | Test: Stand to the side of patient & apply resistance w/hand near wrist & other hand provide counterforce @ the elbow/arm |
Elbow flexion | Short sitting end of table w/elbow fully flexed. | Test: Stand in front of patient; apply resistance to patient's forearm & stabilize the shoulder w/the other hand |
Elbow extension | Prone; arm hanging off table @ shoulder | Test: Stand behind the patient's outstretched arm, Apply resistance to wrist with other hand. Supporting arm just proximal to elbow. |
Hip extension | Prone w/knee flexed to 90 degrees | Test: Stand on side testing by pelvis. Apply resistance posterior thigh above knee; Other hand stabilize the pelvis. |
Hip Abduction | Sidelying (testing upper leg) bottom leg is flexed | Test: Stand behind patient. Apply resistance on the above the knee; Other hand on hip by greater trochanter. |
Hip external/lateral rotation | Short sit on table; hands on table for support | Test: Sit on low stool or kneeling beside test leg. Apply resistance w/hand inside of ankle just above the malleolus (pull leg out); counterpressure with the other hand above the knee |
Hip internal/medial rotation | Short sit on table; hands across chest | Test: Sit on low stool or kneeling. Apply resistance w/hand outside of ankle just above the malleolus (pull leg in); counterpressure with the other hand direct force above the knee |
Knee extension | Short sitting (towel under thigh or tester hand) May grasp table edge for stability | Test: Stand @ the side of the limb to be tested; hand under thigh above knee; other hand apply resistance above the ankle. |
Knee flexion | Prone; toes over edge of table & test leg in 45 degrees of knee flexion | Test: Stand on side testing leg. grasp leg above ankle and apply resistance (inside arm); stabilize with other hand (outside arm) on ischial tuberosity |
Ankle dorsiflexion | Short sitting w/heel in PTA's lap and foot dorsiflexed (toes to ceiling) | Test: Sit on stool to the side w/patients heel resting on thigh. One hand behind ankle; apply resistance on top of foot w/palm of hand. |
Shoulder Extension | Prone; arms at sides, palm up & shoulder internally rotated | Test: Stand to side of patient & apply resistance w/hand above the elbow joint. No stabilizing hand. |
Hip Flexion | Short sitting with thighs fully supported on table. Can use hands to grasp table edge for trunk stability. | Test: Stand next to limb to be tested. Apply resistance (push down to floor) to the top of the thigh above the knee (no stabilizing hand) |
