Lozenges (Troches) | Dissolve slowly in mouth; small solid tablets with medication that may contain sugar or syrup |
Suppository | Solid medicinal substance inserted in vagina or rectum that melts at body temperature |
Solution | Clear liquids that contain a drug dissolved in water |
Syrup | Sugar in water solution that disguise drug's unpleasant taste |
Spirit | Alcoholic solution |
Elixir | Clear, hydroalcoholic liquids that are sweetened |
Tincture | Potent, alcoholic, liquid concentrations of a drug; given in drugs |
Douche | Jet or current of water with medication applied to body part, organ or cavity |
Magma | Contain large bulky particles (ex. milk of magnesia) |
Emulsion | Creamy, white suspensions of fats or oils in an agent that reduces surface tension thus making the oil easier to swallow (ex. castor oil) |
