Arteriosclerosis | a condition characterized by thickening and hardening of the arteries |
Arthritis | a condition characterized by inflammation of the joints |
Asthma | a condition that affects a patients breathing by restricting the airways and oxygen supply due to inflammation, swelling, and irritation |
ADD | a mental disorder characterized by developmentally inappropriate levels of attention, concentration, activity distractability, and impulsivity |
ADHD | a mental disorder characterized by constant impulsive behavior, difficulty in concentration, and hyperactivity that decreases social, academic, or occupational functioning |
Bronchitis | a medical condition characterized by an acute inflammation of the bronchial tubes in the lungs |
Cardiovascular Disease | refers to conditions of the heart and circulatory system |
CHF | a potentially fatal condition of the cardiovascular system wherein the heart has lost its ability to pump blood in and out |
Dementia | a disease characterized by progressive memory loss as well as learning and thinking disorders; often leads to Alzheimer's disease |
Diabetes | a condition characterized by the failure of the body to produce insulin, which is essential for digestion and retreiving energy from food, in the pancreas |
Edema | refers to the abnormal swelling of the body, caused by an increased build-up of fluids in the tissue and organs |
Emphysema | an irreversible disease (characterized by long-term smoking) in which there has been severe damage to the alveoli (tiny air sacs)in the lungs resulting in a decrease in the exchange of gases (wheezing, coughing, short of breath, diff in breathing) |
GERD | a condition that occurs when food is not completely digested and is forced back up the esophagus (heartburn & other symptoms) |
Hemorrhage | refers to severe, uncontrollable bleeding (can be external or internal) |
Hyperlipidemia | refers to high cholesterol |
Hypertension | refers to long-term high blood pressure |
Inflammation | any redness, swelling, pain, or heat in the body tissue(s) caused by a physical injury, infection, or irritation |
Nausea | a feeling of sickness to the stomach, usually accompanied by the urge to vomit |
Osteoporosis | a medical disease characterized by a total loss in bone density; resulting from calcium def., menopause, certain endocrine diseases, advanced age, meds, or other risk factors |
Spasm | an involuntary muscle contraction |
Virus | a very small infectious organism that requires a living cell to reproduce |
