TermDefinition
Absorption is the time it takes for a drug to work after the drug has been administered; rate at which the drug passes from the intestines into the bloodstream
Acute refers to a disease or illness with a sudden onset and a short duration
Adverse Reaction denotes an unwanted or unexpected side effect or reaction to a medication, it may also result from an interaction among 2 or more medications
Allergy a sensitivity of the immune system to a chemical or drug; an allergy causes symptoms ranging from rashes to more severe symptoms such as irregular breathing
Antibody is a protein produced by the immune system to respond to a foreign substances in the body
Chronic refers to a disease or illness that has a long duration (lifetime)
Clinical Trails scientific experiments that test the effect of a drug on human test patients; required by the FDA for approval of a new medication
Contraindication is an aspect of a patients condition that does not agree with the treatment
Diagnosis is a process by which a health care professional (doctor, nurse, or technician) determines the patients condition or disease, following tests and examinations
Distribution is the process following absorption by which a drug is passed to the cells of various organs
Electrolytes are salts that the body requires in its fluids that are essential in nerve, muscle, and heart functions
Excretion is the process by which the body eliminates waste after metabolism and distribution
Half-life defines the amount of time it takes for half of a substance to be broken down in the body and excreted
Immunity is the boys ability to fight off infections from bacteria and viruses
Indication refers to the use of a drug for a particular disease (insulin is used to treat diabetes)
Local refers to a small area or single part of the body (local anesthetic)
Metabolism is defined as the physical and chemical processes of the body that convert consumed food into energy for use by the tissues and organs
Pathogen a microorganism (bacteria or virus) that causes disease
Pharmacology is the study of drugs and thier effects on the body
Side Effects are predicted, unwanted reactions to a substance or combonation of substances
Systemic refers to the whole body
Tolerance is the condition in which the body has become unresponsive to a substance after prolonged exposure
