Public Works Administration (PWA) created in 1934. Great Depression Era program. Provided 85 percent of the cost of public housing projects. 1st federally supported housing program
U.S. Housing Act 1937. Provided $500 mil in home loans for the development of low cost housing. This Act tied slum clearance to public housing.
Resettlement Administration 1935, used New Deal funds to develop new towns. Greendale, WI; Greenhills, OH, and Greenbelt, MD. And, 99 other communities.
Servicemen Readjustment Act 1944, "GI Bill". guaranteed home loans to veterans! Resulted in rapid development of suburbs.
National Housing Act, 1934 Established the Federal Housing Administration to insure home mortgages

Housing Act of 1959 made federal funds available for comprehensive planning at the metropolitan, regional, state, and interstate levels
Housing Act of 1961 provided interest subsidies to nonprofits, limited-dividend corporations, cooperatives, and public housing projects for low and moderate income families and rent
Housing and Urban Development Act of 1965 Created Housing and Urban Development Dept (HUD). And put into place rent subsidies for the poor, home loans at reduced interest rates, and subsidies for public housing projects
Demonstration Cities and Metropolitan Development Act, 1966 Model Cities program. Provided financial incentives for coordinated metro area planning for open spaces, water supply, sewage disposal and mass transit. Also, established a loan guarantee program to encourage the development of "new communities".
Civil Rights Act of 1968 ended racial discrimination in home ownership and rental sales
Housing and Urban Development Act of 1968 provided for the construction of six million subsidized housing units. The Act also authorized monthly subsidies for private houses for low income families.
Pruitt-Igoe project, 1972 public housing project that was demonlished in St. Louis, MO. Marked a shift away from high rise concentrated public housing

National Maunfactured Housing Construction and Safety Act, 1974 Regulated manufactured housing units and prohibited municipalities from regulating manufactured homes through the bldg code. Homes can be regulated in terms of lcoation, size, and appearance. re. 1976 homes or later
Urban Development Action Grant Program (UDAG), 1977 Authorized under 1977 amendments to the 1974 Housing and Community Development Act. Promoted public-private partnerships for redevolopment of urban areas. Required intergovernmental cooperation. Cut funding for 701 comprehensive planning program.
National Affordable Housing Act of 1990 created HOME program, which provides funds for housing rehab
Hope VI, 1992 grant program provided funds for the redevelopment of severely distressed public housing. Allowed for demolition of public housing and construction of new. Deconcentrates public housing.
Consolidated Plan since 1995, communities required to do a Consolidated Plan to receive housing program funding. Includes: community develop and housing profile, needs assessment, local resources inventory, action plan, performance report.
