HTML | Stands for "Hyper-Text Markup Language." This is the language that Web pages are written in. |
HTTP | Stands for "HyperText Transfer Protocol." This is the protocol used to transfer data over the World Wide Web. |
HTTPS | Stands for "HyperText Transport Protocol Secure." It is the same thing as HTTP, but uses a secure socket layer (SSL) for security purposes. |
Serial port | a type of connection on PCs that is used for peripherals such as mice, gaming controllers, modems, and older printers. |
Parallel port | found on the back of older PCs and is used for connecting external devices such as printers or a scanners. |
USB port | Stands for "Universal Serial Bus." It is the most common type of computer port used in today's computers. It can be used to connect keyboards, mice, game controllers, printers, scanners, digital cameras, and removable media drives. |
webmaster | the person in charge of maintaining a Web site |
domain name | the name that identifies an Web site |
domain suffix | the last part of a domain name and is often referred to as a "top-level domain" or TLD. |
encryption | the coding or scrambling of information so that it can only be decoded and read by someone who has the correct decoding key. |
log in/on | a combination of information that authenticates your identity |
log off | disconnects you from the computer/server/site so your information is not still connected; disconnects your account access |
cookie | a small amount of data generated by a website and saved by your web browser. Its purpose is to remember information about you |
screen shot | a picture taken of your computer's desktop. This may include the desktop background, icons of files and folders, and open windows. It may also include whatever is being displayed by currently running programs |
upload | sending a file from your computer to another system |
download | the process in which data is sent to your computer |
auto fill cursor | looks like a thin black cross, you ca use it to repeat things or fill in a series by clicking and dragging, you can only get this cursor if you place your cursor on the bottom right-hand corner of a cell |
select mode cursor | looks like a thick cross,when this cursor is showing you are in normal mode |
click and drag cursor | looks like a white arrow and black outline, when you click your mouse and drag something while this cursor is showing you will move whatever you clicked on to the place you let go of your mouse |
resizing cursor | looks like a thick black line with two arrows intersecting it, used to change the size of rows or columns |
