Gastrointestinal stimulants is used for more generalized GI stimulation, that results in overall increase in GI activity and secreaitons. Theses drugs stimulate the parasympathetic activity or make the GI tissues more sensitive to parasympathetic actions
Gastrointestinal stimulants drugs are: dexpanthenol (IIopan), metoclopramide (Reglan)
dexpanthenol IIopan
dexpantheno (lIIopan) used to increases acetylcholine levels and stimulates the parasympathetic system
metoclopramide Reglan
metoclopramide (Reglan) used for rapid movement of food through upper GI tract
metoclopramide (Reglan) also used for relief of GERD, N/V (chemo pt), promote GI movement or rapid movement and facilitate lacation (breast feeding) also for migrain headaces in emergency rooms
Gastrointestinal stimulants these drugs are... absorbed and met/liver. Its effectivness in improving lacation may be linked to its dopamine blocking effect, which is often associated with increased prolactin levels.
Gastrointestinal stimulants contraindications: GI obstruction or perforation. Caution during preg/lac
Gastrointestinal stimulants adverse effects: nausea, vomiting, dearrhea, intestinal spasm, and cramping. Also can have declining blood pressure and heart rate, weakness and fatigue
Gastrointestinal stimulants drug/drug interactions metaclopramide has been associated w/decreased absorption of digoxin from GI tract. Also, decreased immunosuppressive effects andincreased toxicity of cyclosprine have occured when these drugs where combined.
