Equine Sedation Drugs

MOA of Xylazine alpha-2 agonist that has effect on vessels (vasoconstriction) and Reticular Aorosal System that lasts for ~30min
Is Xylazine reversible? Yes! Yohimbine
Side effects of Xylazine kick, ataxia, ileus, cardiac depression, hyperglycemia
How does Xylazine cause hyperglycemia? downregulates the beta cells in the pancreas, thus decreasing insulin production and inducing hyperglycemia
Concentration of Xylazine 100 mg/ml
Dosage of Xylazine 1-2.5 ml (100-250 mg)
MOA of Detomidine alpha-2 agonist that lasts for 2-3 hours
Concentration of Detomidine 10 mg/ml
Is Detomidine reversible? Yes! Atipamazole.
Dosage of Detomidine 0.3-0.5 ml (3-5 mg)
MOA of Butorphanol opioid partial mu agonist and kappa agonist that lasts for a medium length of time and helps suppress cough reflex
Concentration of Butorphanol 10 mg/ml
Is Butorphanol reversible? Yes! Noloxone.
Dosage of Butorphanol 0.3-0.5 ml IV/IM (3-5 mg)
MOA of Acepromazine tranquilizer that offers NO analgesia and lasts for a medium length of time
Is Acepromazine reversible? NO!!
Concentration of Acepromazine 1 mg/ml OR 10 mg/ml
Dosage of Acepromazine 1-2 ml PO/IV/IM (100-200 mg)
Side effects of Ace paraphimosis, hypotension (profound vasodilation)
MOA of Diazepam benzodiazapine that is used for sedation and for seizure control
Concentration of Diazepam 5 mg/ml
Is Diazepam reversible? Yes! Fluamenzil
Dosage of Diazepam Foals - 1-2 mls IV Seizuring Adults - 10-15 mls rectally or IV
