WANS, Internet Access & Remote Connectivity

QuestionAnswer
WAN Bus Linear, all sites carrry traffic, single connection effects everyone, good for a few sites does not scale well
WAN Ring Forms a ring pattern using 2 parallel lines (1 line is backup), expensive to expand good for 4 or 5 locations
WAN Star Everything connects to one point, if segment fails other nodes still run, if main point fail SOL
WAN Full / Partial Mesh Full: every site is connected to every other site. Partial: only main sites connected, smaller sites connected by dsl ring or bus
WAN Tiered All main sites interconnected all subsites connected to main sites, keeps cost low
Public Switched Telephone Network Public Switched Telephone Network: telephone lines that provide service originally analog but now uses digital, micro, fiber & satillite connections.
Local Loop Connects house to central office and uses UTP which limits throuput to theoretical 56K (acutally 53K and less due to overhead)
X.25 Analog packet switching tech uses error checking for reliable long distance data transmission up to 2Mbs throughput, world standard though not very common in US
Frame Relay Updated X.25 digital packet switching teh for long distance data transmission, relays data from node to node with no error checking, high bandwidth up to 45Mbs throughput
SVC Switched Virtual Circuit: leased backbone bandwidth turned on when you need to transmit data that may take any path
PVC Permanent Virtual Circuit: leased backbone bandwidth allways on when you need to transmit data. Data may take any path
ISDN Bri Integraded Service Digital Network Basic: composed of 2 Bearer channels 64Kbs throu for vioce, data ect and 1 Data channel 16 - 64Kbs
ISDN Pri Integraded Service Digital Network Primary: composed of 23 Bearer channels 64Kbs throu for vioce, data ect and 1 Data channel 16 - 64Kbs
T - Carrier Uses time division multiplexing carrying voice, data, video ect..on multiple channels T1 24 channels @ 64Kbs = 1.5Mbs T3 672 channels @ 64Kbs = 45Mbs
Multiplexing Multiplexing sending data using two wire pairs @ 64Kbs by time division which divides 1channel into 24 chan for T1 or 1 channel into 672 for T3
T1 & T3 Cabling One T1 line can use UTP or STP, Multiple T1 lines or T3 can not due to high throughput - must use fiber-optic cable or microwave connections
DSL Digital Subscriber Line uses amplitude modulation in higher inaudible frequencies to get throughput of 51Mbs. Symetrical - throughput is same speed. Asymetrical - throughput not same speed.
DSL AM A dedicated circuit is created that modem connects to DSL Access Multiplexer that combines them before sending to internet or large carriers.
What Is Broadband Cable Service that relies on cable wiring used for TV signal 36Mbs dwnstrm 10Mbs upstrm
How Does BB Cable Work Requires special cable modem to transmit & receive signal over coaxial cable. Head offices must have replaced coaxial cable with Hybrid Fiber Coax to support bi-directional communications
What is SONET Synchronous Optical Network - a high bandwidth fiber optic WAN signalling technique that uses dual ring self healing topology, specifies framing and multiplexing at the physical layer.
Wireless Internet Most may use 802.11 (a,b,or c) which connect their access points to high speed connections like DSL or T1 lines
WiMax Wireless Internet that uses microwaves designed for MANs. Has range of 20 miles and does not require line of site, throughput is 70Mbps using 2 - 10GHz frequency range.
Geosynchronous Satellites Provide Internet access requires stationary antenna at customer premises which is connected to a modem. Downstream from satellite 400Kbps or more Upstream from customer 53Kbps
Remote User Connect To A LAN or WAN 1. Dial up networking 2. Remote Access Server 3. Remote Control 4. Terminal Services 5. Web Portals 6. Virtual Private Network
Dial Up RAS Allows a remote client to connect to a computer LAN, MAN or WAN using dial up service, ISDN or X.25. Software comes with all operating systems and is well understood however long distance fees will apply. Microsoft version is RAS - Remote Access Service
RRAS Routing & Remote Access Service in MS Server 2003 & XP for high bandwidth , uses SLIP serial line internet protocol for dial up & PPP point to point protocol for high speed to encapsulate higher layer networking protocols such as TCP and IP.
Terminal Service A high performance computer running specialized software, allows multiple users access to apps & resouces. High security - remote users must pass through firewalls, switches, routers and be subject to security addressing and more.
Web Portals Supplies web based applications to remote users through any type of connection. Requires that apps be designed for web use and have excellent security on web server.
VPN Virtual Private Network software or hardware based way to keep data secure & private while using existing public transmission systems to construct a WAN for only its users
Tunneling To make sure all data is private over all connections VPN uses PPTP & L2TP tunneling protocol to encapsulate higher layer protocols.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
