Chapter 7 Terms

all vocabulary from chapter 7: Biology

QuestionAnswer
What is a cell? Basic unit of life
What is cell theory? a fundamental concept of biology
What is a Nucleus? a large membrane enclosed structure that contains the cells genetic material in the form of DNA
What is a eukaryotes? Cells that contain nuclei
What is a prokaryote? Cells that do not contain nuclei
What is organelles? Little organs
What is cytoplasm? the portion of the cell outside of the nucleus
What is a nuclear envelope? The part that surrounds the nucleus
What is chromatin? Granular material that you can see in the nucleus
What are chromosomes? When a cell divides and chromatin fills in
What is nucleolus? Dense region in the nuclei
What is a ribosome? Small particles of RNA and protein found throughout the cytoplasm
What is endoplasmic reticulum? The internal membrane system that eukaryote cells contain
What is golgi apparatus? Protein produced in the rough ER that move into an organelle
What is lyosomes? small organelles filled with enzymes
What are vacuoles? A saclike structure that some cells contain
What is mitochondria? Organelles that convert the chemical energy stored in food into compounds that are more convenient for the cell to use
What is a chloroplast? organelles that capture the energy from sunlight and convert it into chemical energy in a process called photosynthesis
What is a cytoskeleton? A supporting structure when eukaryotic cells are given their shape and internal organization
What are centrioles? Help organize the cell division
What is a cell membrane? The flexible and thin barrier that surrounds cells
What is a cell wall? A strong supporting layer around the membrane that cells produce
What is a lipid bilayer? The composition of nearly all cell membranes is a double layered sheet
What is concentration? the mass of the solute in a given volume of solution
What is diffusion? When cells move from a more concentrated area to a less concentrated area
What is a equilibrium? When the concentration of a solute is the same throughout a solution
What is osmosis? the diffusion of water through a selectively permeable membrane
What is isotonic? When two solutions become the same strength
What is hypertonic? A very concentrated solution
What is hypotonic? The a solution is very weak and not concentrated
What is facilated diffusion? When cell membrane channels help the diffusion of glucose across the membrane
What is actice transport? When cells must move against a concentration
What is endocytosis? The process of taking material into the cells by means of infolding, or pockets, of the cell membrane
What is phagocytosis? extension of cytoplasm that surround a paricle and package it withing a food vacuole
What is pinocystosis? When tiny pcokets form along the cell membrane, fill with liquid, and to form vacuoles within the cell
What is exocytosis? The membrane of the vacuole surrounding the material fuses with the cell membrane, forcing contents out of the cell
What is cell specialization? When cells thoughout an organism can develop thoughout an organism can develop in different ways to perform different task
What is tissue? a group of similiar cells that perform a particular function
What is an organ? When many tissue groups work together
What is an organ system? A group of organs that work together to perform a specific funtion

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
