What is reversal of muscle action? when the origin moves toward the insertion
what is the definition of normal resting length? the length of a muscle when unstimulated & no forces or stresses are placed upon it
the definition of muscle irritability the ability to respond to stimulus
definition of contractility ability to shorten or contract when it receives adequate stimulation
definition of extensibility the ability of a muscle to lengthen or stretch when force is applied
definition of elasticity ability to recoil or return to normal resting length when stretching or shortening force is removed
definition of tension force built up within a muscle
passive tension involves the noncontractile units of a muscle, builds when muscle is stretche
active tension comes from contractile units, can be compared to releasing end of stretched rubber band
total tension of muscle a combination of active and passive tension
Tone the state of readiness of a muscle, slight tension always present in muscle
excursion the distance from max elongation to max shortening (usually 50% longer than muscle at rest)
active insufficiency the point where a muscle cannot shorten any farther, occurs in the agonist (contracting muscle)
passive insufficiency occurs when muscle cannot be elongated any farther without damaging fibers. occurs to the antagonist
tenodesis the functional use of passive insuficiency - eg hand: fingers exten with wrist is flexed, flex when wrist extends
