HB 349 Exam 2
Chapter 9 Laundry Systems
Question | Answer |
---|---|
On site laundry advantages | Cost savings, utilize smaller inventory, extended life of laundered items, higher quality control over the finished product |
On site laundry disadvantages | Cost of equipment, maintenance, labor, energy, take up a lot of space |
Washer extractors | "conventional washers" used to clean laundry and extract the water, utilize a cool down cycle to prevent wrinkling |
Thermal shock | cool water is slowly added in a washing cycle to prevent thermal shock that can cause wrinkling |
Tunnel washers | "batch" or "continuous" washers; series of interconnected washers, keep each bath in a separate cylinder Use just one gallon of water per pound of laundry |
Top transfer machines | Lift laundry in baskets or nets and drains the water in between loading the successive cylinders |
Bottom transfer machines | Transfers both the laundry and the water to the next cylinder. Disadvantage to this type is that dirty water is forwarded with the load |
Extractors | remove water by centrifugal force (spinning) reduce drying time, and energy use, have 2 speeds (fast- natural fiber fabrics, slow- polyester and no iron fabrics) |
Dryers | Dry laundry by tumbling it in a basket exposed to heated air. Can be fueled by gas, electricity or steam. Gas is the most economical, electric are quieter. |
Ironers | give linens the crisp finished look |
folders | some use infrared photo sensors and microprocessors to calculate fold points |
valet equipment | body presses, sleeve finishers, collar-yoke-cuff presses, vacuum spotting boards, etc |
ROI for laundry design | Add total direct and indirect costs/number of pounds of laundry |
Redesigning/designing laundry | Close to the existing laundry as possible/far enough from guest areas to avoid noise issues |
water hammer | rapid filling of machines causes this. occurs when water flowing rapidly in a pipe is abruptly stopped |
Responsibiity for maintenance of laundry | shared by housekeeping and the engineering and maintenance departments |
Maintenance and utility cost issues | Engineering and maintenance |
Day to day activities and decisions responsiblity | housekeeping |
