Implied theme Theme is revealed through the actions, thoughts, and feelings or the characters
First Person character in story tells the story
3rd person limited narrator outside story gives thoughts and feelings of one character
3rd person objective narrator outside story give thoughts and feelings of no characters
Omniscient narrator outside story gives all thoughts and feeling of all characters
Extended Metaphor comparison between two unlike things that continues throughout series of sentences in a story
Motif recurrent image, idea, or theme used throughout the story
Parallel Plots characters in story might start out together and separate to follow their own paths or they might not connect until end
Simile figurative language that uses "like" or "as" to directly compare two unlike things
Diction authors choice of words, taking into account correctness, clearness and effectiveness

Formal Diction impersonal and elevated use of language
Informal Diction language that is correct but conversational
Colloquial Diction refers to a way things are said in a local area that might be different
Slang Diction Type of speech that is characterized by humor, exaggeration or shortened words
Symbol/symbolism The use of symbols to give meaning or represent something that is abstract by using a symbol that is concrete
