Proto-Renaissance art

quatrefoil An ornamental element composed of four lobes radiating from a common center.
patron A person who gives financial or other support to a person, organization, cause, or activity.
patronage the support, encouragement, privilege, or financial aid that an organization or individual bestows to another.
commission Give an order for or authorize the production of a work of art.
fresco Italian word for “fresh”. Fresco is the technique of painting on plaster with pigments ground in water so that the paint is absorbed by the plaster and becomes part of the wall itself.
giornata originating from an Italian word which means "a day's work." The term is used in Buon fresco mural painting and describes how much painting can be done in a single day of painting.
sinopia a red ocher pigment for painting
altarpiece A painted or carved work of art placed behind and above the altar of a Christian church. It may be a single panel or a triptych or a polytch, both having hinged wings painted on both sides. Also called a reredos or retablo.
gold leaf stamping Gold beaten into extremely thin sheets used especially for gilding.
diptych A painting, esp. an altarpiece, on two hinged wooden panels that may be closed like a book.
triptych A picture or relief carving on three panels, typically hinged together vertically and used as an altarpiece.
polyptych An altarpiece or devotional work of art made of several panels joined together, often hinged.
reconstruction An interpretation formed by piecing together bits of evidence
Passion of Christ The suffering of Jesus at the cruxifiction.
