QuestionAnswer
Problem/question Develop a question or problem that can be solved through experimentation.
Observation/research Make observations and research your topic of interest.
Formulate a hypothesis Predict a possible answer to the problem or question. If... Then...
Experiment Develop and follow a procedure.Include a detailed materials list. The outcome must be measurable (quantifiable).
Collect and analyze results Modify the procedure if needed.Confirm the results by retesting. Include tables, graphs, and photographs.
Organizing data Use data tables
Graphing data Use bar, circle, or line graphs
Bar graph shows data about separate but related items are represented by rectangular shapes called bars.
Circle graph shows data as parts of a whole.
Line graph is used to display data that show how one variable (the dependent variable) changes in response to another variable (the independent variable).
Conclusion Include a statement that accepts or rejects the hypothesis.
Communicate the results Be prepared to present the project to an audience.
Effect Noun
Affect Verb
Hypothesis The hypothesis is an educated guess about the relationship between the independent and dependent variables.
Independent variable The independent, or manipulated variable, is a factor that’s intentionally varied by the experimenter.
Dependent variable The dependent, or responding variable, is the factor that may change as a result of changes made in the independent variable.
Control group In a scientific experiment, the control is the group that serves as the standard of comparison. The control group is exposed to the same conditions as the experimental group, except for the variable being tested.
Constants The constants in an experiment are all the factors that the experimenter attempts to keep the same.
Trials Trials refer to replicate groups that are exposed to the same conditions in an experiment.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
