Basic Statistics for Business and Economics ch 4

Dot Plot | A dot is displayed for each observation along a horizontal number line indicating the possible values of the data. |
Quartiles | Dividing a set of observations into four equal parts. |
Deciles | Dividing a set of observations into ten equal parts. |
Percentiles | Dividing a set of observations into 100 equal parts. |
Box Plot | A graphical display, based on quartiles, that help us picture a set of data. |
Interquartile Range (IQR) | The distance between the first and the third quartile. Q3 - Q1 |
Outlier | A value that is inconsistent with the rest of the data. A value that is more than 1.5 times the interquartile range smaller than Q1 or larger than Q3. |
Symmetric | A set of observations where the mean and median are equal and the data values are a mirror image of those above. |
Skewed to the Right or Positively Skewed | A set of values where there is a single peak and the values extend much further to the right of the peak than to the left of the peak. |
Skewed to the Left or Negatively Skewed | A set of values where there is a single peak and the values extend much further to the left of the peak than to the right of the peak. |
Bimodal Distribution | A set of values that have two or more peaks. |
Scatter Diagram | A graphical technique used to show the relationship between variables. Two variables are needed. Scale one variable along the horizontal axis (x-axis) of a graph and one variable along the vertical axis (y-axis). |
Contingency Table | A table used to classify observations according to two identifiable characteristics. |
