What was the original purpose of the Constitutional Convention? | To revise the Articles of Confederation. White males who owned land and were free attended. |
Explain the Virginia Plan. | Bicameral (two houses) legislature, both based on population. Upset smaller states. |
What was the Great Compromise? | Bicameral legislature, one house based on population, other equal vote. |
What was the three-fifths compromise? | Each slave would count as three-fifths of a person toward population. |
What was the decision involving slave trade? | Congress would not do anything about slavery until 1808 (20 years) |
Describe the belief of the anti-federalists and federalists. | Anti-federalists opposed the Constitution because they thought it didn't protect rights, need Bill of Rights. Federalists were with the Constitution and thought it was a Bill of Rights. |
What were checks and balances? | Each branch has powers over the others in order to prevent one branch from becoming too powerful. |
Explain federalism. | The sharing of powers between a national gokvernment and smaller governments, power lies with the states, schools are part of state power. |
Why were the federalist papers important? | They persuaded the passage of the Constitution. |
Describe what is found in the Bill of Rights. | Protected the rights of individual citizens. |
Why are there amendments? | So the Constitution can last and change with the times and continue to protect American needs. |
Which powers are shared between the states and the national government? | Taxes, enforce laws, borrow money. |
What does it mean if a law in unconstitutional? | Goes against the Constitution. |
What is the purpose of judicial review? | The power to review laws and see if they are unconstitutional? |
What are the 1st, 4th, and 9th amendments? | The Bill of Rights protects us: 1- Speech, religion, petition. assembly, press 4-protects from illegal searches and seizures without a warrant 9- rights not listed in the Constitution |
How does our government separate powers? why? | Legislative writes the laws, executive enforces the laws, the judicial interprets the laws. |
