Garnished Wages a court order for an employer to withhold a certain amount of your wages as repayment for debt.
Workman's Compensation A system whereby an employer must pay, or provide insurance to pay, the lost wages and medical expenses of an employee who is injured on the job.
OSHA the main federal agency charged with the enforcement of safety and health legislation
Short-term disability insurance can help workers that suffer a temporary illness or injury that leaves them out of work for a short period of time.
Cost of Living Allowance adjusts salaries based on changes in a cost-of-living index.
Unemployment Benefits A federal program whereby eligible unemployed persons receive cash benefits for a specified period of time.
Personal Time a form of employment benefit in the form of paid time off for taking care of personal business.
Sick Time a form of employment benefit in the form of paid time off for when an employee is ill.
Shift Differential additional pay premiums to compensate employees for working hours and shifts other than regular weekday shifts.
Time and a half A rate of pay that is one and a half times the regular rate, as for overtime work.
Overtime the amount of time someone works beyond normal working hours. In the United States normal working hours are between 35 and 40 hours.
Bonus A sum of money or an equivalent given to an employee in addition to the employee's usual compensation.
FMLA The Family and Medical Leave Act provides employees who qualify with up to 12 work weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave in a 12-month period for specified family and medical reasons.
Benefits indirect and non-cash compensation paid to an employee. Examples health insurance, paid vacation time and sick time.
Deductions Amount withheld by an employer from employee's earnings. It typically includes income tax, national insurance or social security.
Gross Wages how much you made before anything is taken out of your pay check.
Net Wages The remaining amount of an employee's gross pay after deductions, such as taxes and retirement contributions, are made.
Networking a supportive system of sharing information and services among individuals and groups having a common interest
Qualifications A quality or accomplishment that makes someone suitable for a particular job or activity.
Reference individuals who can attest to your skills, qualifications, and abilities.
Medicare Tax Tax deducted from the wages of every legally working American that is used to pay for the Medicare program
Federal Income Tax A charge imposed by government on the annual gains of a person, corporation, or other taxable unit derived through work.
Social Security Tax Tax deducted from the wages of every legally working American that is used to pay for the Social Security System.
Union An association, combination, or organization of employees who band together to secure favorable wages, improved working conditions, and better work hours.
Retirement Withdrawal from one's occupation, business, or office.
401K A retirement investment plan that allows an employee to put a percentage of earned wages into a tax-deferred investment account selected.
IRA Individual Retirement Account.
