Type: nitrates uses: prophylaxis, treatment, and management of angina, acute myocardial infarction (MI) consumption  decreases preload with venous pooling  decreases afterload by decreasing peripheral vascular resistance
(Nitro-Bid) IV is to be titrate according to blood pressure.
nitroglycerin meds to meds interaction  life-threatening: sudden, severe refractory hypotension when taken with sildenafil citrate (Viagra) or tadalafil (Cialis), methemoglobinemia, contact dermatitis
most common: headache, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, reflex tachycardia, postural hypotension Nitroglycerin adverse effects
 severe anemia, cardiac tamponade cerebral hemorrhage or trauma hypovolemia, hypotension, shock contraindications of nitroglycerin
establish baseline data and monitor during: blood pressure, heart rate, EKG, chest pain may decrease effectiveness of heparin  withdraw treatment gradually to avoid angina  toxicity: central nervous system changes, hypotension, flushing, nausea nursing care of nitroglycerin
client teaching of nitroglycerin  sit down when taking, change positions slowly  report blurred vision or dry mouth, avoid alcohol  keep tablets away from light, moisture, and body heat; change tablets every 6 months
for acute angina: take 1 tablet sublingual (or 1 spray under the tongue) every 5 minutes up to three doses; seek emergency treatment if there is no pain relief procedure during an acute angina attack
