Unit 4- Computer Ethics

What is Copyright? It is legal right of ownership to the work produced in books, music, plays, graphics/pictures and computer software.
What does Copyright protect? It protects tangible expression of ideas.
What it the purpose of Copyright? The purpose of copyright is to protect the creative of a creative work.
What is Infringement? It is the Act of violating a copyright by copying or otherwise distributing a copyrighted work without permission or authorization.
What if you infringe someone's work? You can be sued.
What is Fair use? It allows copyrighted work to be re purposed and used in another work.
What determines if a copyright work is “fair use”? Education, commentary or criticism, news reporting, parody or making fun of work, using a small portion of the work.
What would be an example of a derivative work based on a book? A screenplay for a movie based on the book.
What is Software? Programs that tell a computer what to do
What are some different types of software? Microsoft office, MicroType, MicroPace Pro
What is copyrighted software? Software that is legally protected against copying or being used without paying for it.
Some examples of copyrighted software include MicroType, Microsoft Office, MicroPace Pro
What is Public domain software? Non-copyrighted software that anyone may copy or use without charge
What is shareware? Copyrighted software that may be tried without expense but requires payment if you decide to use it.
Some examples of hare ware include TuneUp Utilities 2009
What is freeware? Software on the web that is freely available (but retains a copyright)
Some examples of freeware include Mozilla Firefox, Adobe Flash Player, Quick Time Player
What is Piracy? The act of stealing valuable property by copying software, music, graphics/pics, movies, and books (all available on the Internet)
What is Hacking? Breaking into computers to read private e-mails and other files (Hackers delete or alter files)
What is Identity Theft? Occurs when someone appropriates another's personal information without their knowledge to commit theft or fraud.
What is releasing Virus Worms? Intentionally releasing a virus or worm to harm other or attack networks.
