Pharmacy Satellite? A branch of the in-patient "pharmacy responsible for servicing" a subset of the hospitalized patients, preparing, dispensing, and monitoring medication for specific patient areas.
Centralized Pharmacy? "The main in-patient pharmacy" in a hospital that has pharmacy satellites.
Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee? The P&T committee is "primarily responsible for making the final decision on therapeutic interchange protocol"
Infection Control Committee? The major role for the "Infection Control Committee (ICC)" is the prevention of nosocomial infections in the hospital
PT Role Alert? Alert "Pharmacist" of all potential errors
Investigational Drug Service? Deals mostly with "clinical drug trails"
IV/Clean "Room"(IV admixtures) is prepared in a hospital "setting "
Nursing Unit Inspection? to ensure compliance with hospital medication policies /"stash", check emergency drug kits for missing or expired drugs
USP 797 Policies? includes a strict set of "policies of practices" for hospital pharmacy prrparation of sterile products
Drug Shortage? discontinuation of one brand that may cause temporary shortage of another brand, shortage of a natural product or problems in the "manufacturing process"
Extemporaneous compounds? medications which must be prepared following a "specific recipe or formula", usually because they are not available commercially(for example oral medication)
Unit dose? a package containing the amount of a drug for "one dose"
Meds repackaged "except"? Metered dose inhaler
Medication carts? contain an individual "drawer or tray" for each patient, each individual drawer in a medication cart is filled with daily medication given to a patient
"PRN" order? an order for medication to be administered only on an "as needed" basis
(CPOE) "Computerized" Physician Order Entry? helps eliminate errors due to illegible handwriting. MD "data" entry prescription information into "data" base instead of hand written prescriptions.
"Restricted" distribution? Medications having "limited availability" to cost, manufacturing problems, or safety concerns.
IV "Drip" Rounds? to "reduce" the number of STAT medications and "decrease" shift workload with less pharmacy personnel
DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration) a regulating agency for controlled substances (CI-CV)
"Code" Cart? a "locked" cart of medications designed for emergency use Universal precaution
Automated dispensing system? Automated unit which dispenses medications at the point of use
Biological Safety Cabinet? Where IV Cytotoxic or chemotherapeutic drugs are prepared
"Clean" room? an area of the pharmacy designed for the preparation of "sterile" product
"Controlled" Access Program? put "limits" on prescribing, dispensing, or distribution of certain medications from the manufacturer, usually due to safety concerns or supply shortages, foe example: Thlomid, Clozaril, and Acutone
HIPPA? Health Insurance Portability Accountability Act(HIPPA) which safeguards a patient's protected healthcare information
Medication Administration record? helps nurses "record and track medications" given to patient's
Know military time/hospital time 1300=1p.m.
Pyxis? Automated dispensing machine that provides "easy access" to patient for the nursing staff
"STAT"? Medication to be administered "immediately"
Hospital Departments? are required to maintain a policy and procedure manual
