toxicology 1 terms

TermDefinition
Toxicants substance that produces adverse biological effects of any nature
Poisons toxicant that cause immediate death or illness when experienced in very small amounts
Toxins specific proteins produced by leaving organisms
Xenobiotic general term indicates that any foreign substance introduced into the body
Intoxication abnormal state that is essentially a poisoning
Detoxification physiological or medicinal removal of toxic substances from the body
Hazard Ability of toxic agent to cause injury in a given situation or setting
Exposure State of being exposed to or contact with something (acute, chronic, repeated)
Bioaccumulation The accumulation of a substance, such as a toxic chemical, in various tissues of a living organism. It takes place w/in an organism when the rate of intake of a substance is greater than the rate of excretion or metabolic transformation of that substance
Biomagnification The increasing concentration of a substance, such as a toxic chemical, in the tissues of organisms at successively higher levels in a food chain
Bioactivation The metabolic activation of xenobiotic compounds into reactive, toxic compounds
