Absorbtion The process by which a drug passes into the blood stream
Passive absorbtion -Occurs mostly by difussion - Does not require energy
sActive Absorbtion -Requires carrier such as lipids,protiens,and enzymes to move the drug against the concentration gradient
Pinocytosis Process by which cell carry drugs across their membrane by engulfing the drug particle
First- Pass effect The drug passes through the liver first
Bioavailbility Percentage of the drug that reaches the systemic circulation
Factors that alter Bioavailbility 1.drug form 2. Route 3. GI and mucosa and motility 4.food and other drugs 5. changes in the liver
Distribution the transporting of a drug from it's site of absorbtion to it's site of action
Metabolism Detoxification / biotransformation
Half- Life the time it takes for one half of the drug concentration to be eliminated
Steady State intake of the drug amount meatabolized and excreted
Excretion Elimination - Main route through the kidneys
Creatine Clearance the most accurate test for renal fuction
Onset time it takes to reach the minimum effective concentration
Peak Highest blood or plasma level
Duration Length of time the drug has a pharmacologic effect
Receptors Drug-binding sites usually protiens
Agonist A drug that produces a response
Antagonist a drug that blocks a response
Therapeutic index estimates the margin of safety of a drug
