Disadvantages of the oral route? delayed onset because must disintegrate in stomach and small intestines first. destruction of drug by GI fluids. delayed absorption because food or drink are present in stomach
Advantages of the topical route? works quickly. faster relief. fewer side effects
Disadvantages of the patch? cost. skin irritation at the site
What are most poison ivy cases treated with? OTC products such as hydrocortisone cream
What is ointment good for? dry areas
What are lotions best used for? hairy areas of body
Why are creams selected over lotions? faster absorbed and work longer
Which route of administration can be used for local and systemic effects? sprays for inhalation through the nose
Fact!!! Eye drops can be instilled to the ear by ear drops cant be instilled to the eye because they aren't sterile!!!
Advantages of parenteral route? faster effect.
Disadvantages of parenteral route? cost. reaction. if you overdose it cant be taken out. cant do it yourself
Different types of syringes? Insulin Syringe- 100 units and 50 units. Hypodermic Syringe- 6 mL and 3 mL. Tuberculin Syringe- metric measures
Intravenous injection degree angle? into vein at 15 to 20 degrees
Intramuscular injection degree angle? into muscle at 90 degrees
Subcutaneous injection angle? into subcutaneous tissue at 45 degrees
Intradermal injection angle? just below epidermis of skin at 10 to 15 degrees
