Détente | A relaxation tensions between the United states and the Soviet Union that occurred in the mid-1970's. |
Era of Good Feeling | A period of one-party rule symbolized by James Monroe's near-unanimous election in 1820. |
Executive Agreement | A presidential agreement with another head of state. It has the power of law but does not require senate approval. |
Exit Polls | Polls that are based on questioning individuals after they have left voting booths on election day. The responses can allow TV networks to make early predictions regarding candidate winners or losers. |
Fluidity | The idea that public opinion can change very quickly, sometimes overnight. |
Grand Old Party (GOP) | A nickname for the Republican party. |

Justiciable | The idea that conflicts must be resolved by the courts. |
Lobbyist | A paid representative of an interest group who tries to influence the policy decisions and views of public official. |
Minor Political Party | A political party that for some reasons of ideology, economic protest, issues or factionalism challenges the two major parties. |
Petit Jury | A jury that decides upon the ultimate innocence or guilt of an individual. |
Public Agenda | The list of those issues publicized heavily by the media in order to attract the attention of the public. |
Regressive Tax | A tax that disproportionately affects lower-income taxpayers, such as sales tax. |
Straight-Party Ticket | A phenomenon in which voters select all of their candidates from one party. |
Umbrella Parties | The idea that both major parties accept members from nearly all groups and social classes in America. By clinging to the political center, they maximize their voting appeal. |
