Cardiac Drugs

QuestionAnswer
amiodarone (Cordarone) Continuous ECG moitoring. Onset of 1-3 weeks
nitroglycerine (Nitrostat) Use manufacturer specified tubing. Common S/E is headache. Contraindicated in use with Viagra = severe hypotension
procainamide (Pronestryl) S/E: diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, heart failure. Do baseline assessment for these before admin. Adverse effects are severe hypotension and cardiac arrest.
lidocaine (Xylocaine) Used to treat ventricular dysrhythmias like PVC. S/E: Heart block so monitor ECG changes. Neurological changes indicate toxicity. Given IV push 1-1.5 mg/kg at 50 mg/min, then follow with bolus of 1-4 mg/min via infusion pump
digoxin (Lanoxin) Dose 0.125mg. Anorexia, nausea, and green-yellow vision are signs of toxicity. Chance of toxicity is increased with hypokalemia
aluminum hydroxide gel Interferes with the absorption of other drugs so wait one hour to take after taking other meds
sodium nitroprusside (Nipride) Vasodilator that reduces preload and afterload. Must be administered via infusion pump and protected from light with aluminum wrap
nitroglycerin paste (Nitro-Dur) Prevents angina
quinidine gluconate (Quinidex) Don't double dose
disopyromide (Norpace) Adverse effect is urinary retention
propranolol (Inderal) Avoid OTC cold and weight loss drugs with ephedrine which may block or adversely interact with prescribed med
diltiazem (Cardizem) Administered before meals and at bedtime to increase absorption
nicardipine (Cardene) Reduces systemic vascular resistance and is therefore useful in reducing BP
hydralazine (Apresoline) Adverse effect is hypotension
