usage | this refers to how words are used in a language to effectively communicate. |
misplaced modifier | it is a modifier that is in the wrong place or it is removed from what it should be modifying |
action verbs | words that tell what is happening |
verbs | words that express action or a state of being |
linking verb | connects the subject to a word or phrase in teh sentence |
helping verb | is used along with another verb to make a verb phrase |
present tense | expresses action occurring now, always, or repeatedly |
past tense | expresses a previous action or connection |
future tense | indicates an action that will begin at a later time |
pronoun | a word that takes the place of a noun |
subject - verb agreement | in a sentence this means that the subject and the verb match. If the sentence has a singluar subject, it must also have a singular verb |
antecedent of a pronoun | a word or phrase or clause to which a pronoun is referring. The pronoun and its antecedent must agree in number, gender, and person |
adverb | words used to modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs |
adjective | words used to modify nouns |
double negative | when two negative words are used to express one negative idea |
end punctuation | a mark that signals the end of a sentence |
period | a mark that ends a declarative sentence |
question mark | a mark that ends a sentence that is asking a question |
comma | a mark that helps to separate parts of a list or phrases and clauses in a sentence |
quotation marks | makrs used to signify a direct quote and indicate that whatever is within the marks was said or written exactly as it appears |
colon | used to introduce a list or sometimes to show particular emphasis on what comes after it |
semicolon | used to join to independent clauses |
apostrophes | a mark used to show posession or help to form a contraction |
proper noun | a noun that names a specific person place or thing and must be capitalized |
