Name the two ways that someone becomes an American citizen. Birth or naturalized
Naturalization a legal process to obtain citizenship
Patriotism the love for one’s country
People can immigrate to America either legally or illegally. What is the difference? Why do people come to the U.S. illegally? Legal: apply for visa or Green Card. Illegal: overstay visa/vacation or cross border. Come to US illegally because process is long/expensive
Public policy the course of action the government takes in response to an issue or problem
What are the 5 principles of democracy? Explain. Rule of Law: no one is above the law. Consent of the Governed: citizens give gov’t consent to rule. Individual Rights: each person has rights. Limited Government: gov’t not all-powerful. Rep Gov't: Citizens elect people to represent them in Congress
What is the difference between a dictatorship and a democracy? Dictatorship: one person/small group rules. Democracy: people rule.
What is the naturalization process? (6 steps) 1) Sign a document, 2) Live in U.S. for 5 years, 3) Apply for citizenship, 4) Interview with USCIS official, 5) Exam, 6) Attend ceremony
What type of democracy does the U.S. have? Representative Democracy
Why is it important that Americans respect and celebrate diversity Opinion
