St. Lawrence Seaway | North America’s most important deepwater ship route. Completed in the 1950s as a joint project of the United States and Canada. Connects the Great Lakes to the Atlantic Ocean. |
Great Plains | a largely treeless area that continues the ascent to about 4,ooo feet. |
Rocky Mountains | major mountain system of the United States and Canada. They are a series fo ranges that exted about 3,000 miles form Alaska to New Mexico. |
Mississippi River | A major river that runs north-south almost the length of the United States. From Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico. Part of the longest river system on the continent. |
Representative Democracy | People rule through elected representatives. |
Federal Republic | where powers are divided among the federal, national and various state governments. |
Free Enterprise System | An economic system where private individuals own most of the resources, technology and businesses and operate them for profit with little control from the government. |
Service Industries | Any kind of economic activity that produces a service rather than a product. Nearly 3 out of 4 Americans work in service related jobs. |

Prime Minister | The majority party’s leader in Parliament. Head of Government. |
Prairie Provinces | Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta. |
Nunavut | It is the home to Canada’s Inuit. Came from the eastern half of the Northwest Territories in 1999. |
Dominion of Canada | Passed in 1867, the British North American Act. it is a loose political union of Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. It is self government but part of British Empire. |
Beringia | a land bridge that once connectd Siberia and Alaska |
Appalachian Mountains | One of two major mountains chains in the U.S. and Canada. They extend some 1,600 miles from Newfoundland to Alabama. |
Megalopolis | A region in which several large cities and surrounding areas grow together. |
Urban Sprawl | A porrly planned development that spreads a city’s population over a wider and wider geographic area. |
Assimilation | A process whereby a minority group gradually gives up its own culture and adopt the culture of a majority group. |
Coalition | An alliance. |
Multiculturalism | Many cultures in one country. |
Infrastructure | The basic support systems needed to keep and economy going, including power, communications, transportation, water, sanitation and education systems. |
Global Network | a worldwide interconnected group. |
Office of Homeland Security | Created after 9/11, was established to coordinate antiterrorist efforts. |
Canadian Multiculturalism Act | Enacted in 1988, to promote and protect diversity. Ensures the equality for people of all origins and enriches their country. |
Smart Growth | The efficient use oand conservation of land and other resources |
terrorism | The uses of or threatened use of, force or violence against individuals or property for the purpose of intimidating or causing fear for political or social end. |
Substainable community | A community where residents can live and work in harmony with the environment |

Mackenzie River | Canada’s longest river, and is part of a river system that flows across the Northwest Territories to the Arctic Ocean. |
