Ganges River | An important water resource for the Hindu and also a sacred river. Found in South Asia, flows for 1,500 miles from its source in the Himalayan glacier to the Bay of Bengal. (p. 560) |
Nonviolent resistance | A movement that uses all means of protest except violence. (p. 568) |
Raj | The period of British rule in India, which lasted for nearly 200 years, from 1857 to 1947. (p. 568) |
Caste systems | The Aryan system of social classes in India and one of the cornerstones of Hinduism in which each person is born into a caste and can only move into a different caste through reincarnation. (p. 572) |
Kashmir | A region of northern India and Pakistan over which several destructive wars have been fought. (p. 574) |
Constitutional monarchies | A government in which the ruler’s powers are limited by a constitution and the laws of a nation. (p. 580) |
Basic necessities | Food, clothing and shelter. (p. 593) |
Illiteracy | The inability to read or write. (p. 593) |
Infant mortality rates | The number of deaths among infants under age one as measured per thousand live births. (p. 594) |
Education | Is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty and providing South Asians with the means to raise their standard of living. |
Summer monsoons | Is a wind system that blows form the southwest across the Indian Ocean toward South Asia from June through September. They release large amounts of rain and cause severe flooding, (p. 597) |
Winter monsoons | Is a wind system that blows from the northeast across the Himalayas toward the seas from October through February. These winds carry little moisture and can cause droughts. (p. 597) |
Disasters | Bagladash had one of the worst disasters of the 20th century. In 1970 a cyclone struck the southern coast and killed more thatn 300,000 people. |
Kashmir | Leader Maharajah tried to keep Kashmir independent, but both Pakistan and India want it. So in 1947 he ceded it to India. There have been two wars , 1965 and 1971, each control part of Kashmir. |
Nuclear weapons | Both India and Pakistan have tested nuclear weapons. With the 50 year dispute still going on, the rest of the world is horrified that it could end in nuclear war. |
Dynasty | A series of rulers from the same family. The first in China was the Shang, started in 1700s BC. And lasting 600 years. |
Boxer Rebellion | An uprising in China in 1900, spurred by angry Chinese militants or Boxers, over foreign control. Several hundred Europeans, Christians and Chinese died. |
Mao Zedong | Under the leadership of Mao in 1949, the Communist finally defeated the Nationalist, ruling Mainland China. Chiang and the Nationalist fled to Taiwan. |
Family Policy | In 1979, China adopted the policy of one child per family. |
Pacific Rim | An economic and social region including the countries surrounding the Pacific Ocean, extending clockwise from New Zealand in the western Pacific to Chile in the eastern Pacific and including the west coast of the U.S. |
Economic Tiger | A country with rapid economic growth due to cheap labor, high technology and aggressive exports. Taiwan, Singapore and South Korea are considered economic tigers. |
Seoul | The largest city in South Korea. Population is more than 10 million. |
