Atmosphere | a layer of gases surrounding the planet that is retained by Earth's gravity |
Biosphere | part of the earth and its atmosphere in which living organisms exist or that is capable of supporting life |
Contour lines | imaginary lines that join points of equal elevation on the surface of the land above or below a reference surface, such as mean sea level |
Cultural feature | a place associated with people eg. historic monument |
GIS | use technology to capture, store and analyse geographically referenced information (physical locations) |
GPS | uses satellite technology to assign accurate geographical locations and help people to navigate easily |
Gradient | steepness of slopes |
Hydrosphere | the liquid water component of the Earth. |
Human and physical interaction | how humans depend upon, adapt to and modify the environment |

Scale | the relationship between distance on a map and on the earth's surface eg 1:25 000 |
Topographic | map showing the shape of the Earth’s surface shown by contour lines or layer shading |
UTM grid reference | grid coordinate system, which divides the earth into a perpendicular grid with constant linear surface distances, in meters, between each of its grid lines in all directions |
