Absolute location exact place on Earth, often given in terms of latitude and longitude
Atmosphere a layer of gases surrounding the planet that is retained by Earth's gravity
Biosphere part of the earth and its atmosphere in which living organisms exist or that is capable of supporting life
Contour lines imaginary lines that join points of equal elevation on the surface of the land above or below a reference surface, such as mean sea level
Cultural feature a place associated with people eg. historic monument
GIS use technology to capture, store and analyse geographically referenced information (physical locations)
GPS uses satellite technology to assign accurate geographical locations and help people to navigate easily
Gradient steepness of slopes
Hydrosphere the liquid water component of the Earth.
Human and physical interaction how humans depend upon, adapt to and modify the environment
Latitude lines running horizontally, and are parallel to the equator (degrees North or South)
Lithosphere includes the crust and the uppermost mantle, which constitute the hard and rigid, rocky outer layer of the Earth
Longitude lines running vertically, are parallel to the Prime Meridian (degrees East or West)
Movement eg. human migration, atmospheric circulation, ocean currents
Region an area that is defined by certain similar characteristics
Relative location a description of how a place is related to other places. For example, the Empire State building is 365 kilometers (227 miles) north of the White House in Washington
Remote sensing a way that Geographers can produce maps without actually visiting the area, sources include satellites, radar and aerial photography
Scale the relationship between distance on a map and on the earth's surface eg 1:25 000
Topographic map showing the shape of the Earth’s surface shown by contour lines or layer shading
UTM grid reference grid coordinate system, which divides the earth into a perpendicular grid with constant linear surface distances, in meters, between each of its grid lines in all directions
