Reference map a highly generalized map type designed to show general spatial properties of features
thematic map the thematic map is type map or chart designed to show a particlar theme connected with a specific geographic
GPS Global postitioning system
GIS geographic information system
distance scale a point or place that is far away from another point or place
directional indicater An instrument which displays heading transmitted electrically from a remote compass system.
inset map A small map or illustration set within a larger one.
legend the wording on a map or diagram explaining the symbols used.
latitude The angular distance north or south of the earth's equator, measured in degrees along a meridian, as on a map or globe.
longitude Angular distance on the earth's surface, measured east or west from the prime meridian at Greenwich, England, to the meridian passing through a position, expressed in degrees (or hours), minutes, and seconds.
equator an imaginary line drawn around the earth equally distant from both poles, dividing the earth into northern and southern hemispheres and constituting the parallel of latitude 0°.
prime meridian the zero of longitude
north hemisphere hat is to the north of the equator
southern henisphere that is south of the equator
eastern hemisphere that is east of the equator
western hemisphere that is west of the equator
continent any of the world's main continuous expanses of land (Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America, South America).
map grid A symbolized network of lines, or graticule, representing parallels and meridians or plane coordinates. Plane coordinate grids are almost always rectangular with uniform spacing. Azimuthal map grids are organized as polar coordinates
