latitude | The angular distance north or south of the earth's equator, measured in degrees along a meridian, as on a map or globe. |
longitude | Angular distance on the earth's surface, measured east or west from the prime meridian at Greenwich, England, to the meridian passing through a position, expressed in degrees (or hours), minutes, and seconds. |
equator | an imaginary line drawn around the earth equally distant from both poles, dividing the earth into northern and southern hemispheres and constituting the parallel of latitude 0°. |
prime meridian | the zero of longitude |
north hemisphere | hat is to the north of the equator |
southern henisphere | that is south of the equator |
eastern hemisphere | that is east of the equator |
western hemisphere | that is west of the equator |
continent | any of the world's main continuous expanses of land (Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America, South America). |
map grid | A symbolized network of lines, or graticule, representing parallels and meridians or plane coordinates. Plane coordinate grids are almost always rectangular with uniform spacing. Azimuthal map grids are organized as polar coordinates |
