Aborigine | An aboriginal inhabitant of Australia. |
Lagoon | A stretch of salt water separated from the sea by a low sandbank or coral reef. |
Cyclone | A system of winds rotating inward to an area of low atmospheric pressure. |
Outback | The remote and usually uninhabited inland regions of Australia. |
Artesian well | A well drilled through impermeable strata into strata that receive water from a higher altitude so there is pressure to force the water to flow upward. |
Geyser | A gas-fired water heater through which water flows as it is rapidly heated. |
Trust territory | A territory under the trusteeship of the United Nations or of a country designated by it. |
Crevasse | A breach in the embankment of a river or canal. |
Ice shelf | A floating sheet of ice permanently attached to a landmass. |
Pack ice | An expanse of large pieces of floating ice driven together into a nearly continuous mass, as occurs in polar seas. |
Convergence zone | A location where airflows or ocean currents meet. |
Krill | A small shrimplike planktonic crustacean of the open seas. It is eaten by a number of larger animals, notably the baleen whales. |
