cardinal directions | north, south, east and west |
intermediate directions | northeast, southeast, northwest, southwest |
compass rose | a directional arrow that shows cardinal and sometimes intermediate directions |
legend | a list that explains the symbols on a map |
degrees | unit for latitude and longitude |
equator | an imaginary line that runs around the center of the Earth, halfway between the North and South Poles |
meridians | imaginary lines on the Earth that run between the North and South Poles |
north pole | the point on the Earth located at 90 degrees north latitude, where the lines of longitude meet |
parallels | imaginary lines on Earth that run parallel (never touch or cross) to the equator (also called lines of latitude) |
prime meridian | an imaginary line that runs from the North Pole to the South Pole of the Earth at 0 degrees longitude |
south pole | the point on the Earth located at 90 degrees south latitude where the lines of longitude meet |
cartographer | a mapmaker |
hemisphere | half of the Earth |
geographic grid | an intersecting pattern formed by lines of longitude and latitude |
absolute location | a description of a place using grid coordinates of latitude and longitude (an exact spot) |
coordinates | the latitude and longitude address of a place on a map |
relative location | description of a place using the relation of one place to another (not exact-more general) |
contiguous | sharing an edge or boundary; touching |
inset map | a smaller map set within the border of a larger one |
