city-state | an independent state made up of a city and the territories depending on it |
golden age | a period of great wealth, culture, and democracy in Greece |
philosopher | a person who examines questions about the universe and searches for the truth |
republic | a form of government in which officials are elected by the people to govern |
patrician | a wealthy landowner in ancient Rome |
plebeian | a farmer or lower class person in ancient Rome |
barbarian | a soldier or warrior considered to be culturally less developed than those being fought; the term originally comes from the German tribes who invaded the Roman Empire in A.D. 235 |
aqueduct | a transport system for carrying water long distances, sometimes raised on a bridge |
feudal system | a social structure during the Middle Ages consisting of a king, lords, vassals, and serfs |
serf | from the 1500s to the 1800s, a poor Russian or European peasant farmer who rented land from a landlord and had few rights |
perspective | an artistic way of showing objects as they appear to people in terms of relative distance or depth, as if in three dimensions |
indulgence | a fee paid to the church to relax the penalty for a sin during the Middle Ages |
