Isthmus | A narrow strip of land connecting two land masses. |
Pope | The Bishop of Rome, who is head of the Roman Catholic Church. |
Maya | A civilization that developed in Central America on the Yucatan Peninsula that reached its peak around 2,000 years ago. |
Aztec | An empire that was centered in what is now Mexico, whose capital city was built on islands in a lake where Mexico City is today. |
Inca | An empire that developed in the Andes Mountains of South America. |
Columbian Exchange | The exchange of goods, people, ideas, plants, animals, and diseases between the Old World (Europe) and the New World (The Americas). |
Conquistadors | Conquerors; Spanish Soldiers who conquered native people in the New World. |
Monroe Doctrine | A policy declared by US president James Monroe; it stated that rivalries and wars of countries in the old world should not affect the freedom and independence of countries in the new world. |
Drug Cartel | A criminal drug-trafficking organization. |
Pathways to Prosperity in the Americas | Organization that developed a system to assist struggling countries move out of severe poverty. |
Christopher Columbus | An Italian explorer responsible for the European discovery of America in 1492. He had sailed across the Atlantic Ocean from Spain, under the patronage of the king and queen, Ferdinand and Isabella, hoping to find a westward route to India. |
Augusto Pinochet | Chilean general and dictator who served as president (1974-1990) after leading a junta that overthrew the government of Salvador Allende (1973), and later became chief of the army (1990-1998) and senator (1998-2002). |
Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman | Mexican drug lord he is head of the Sinaloa cartel, the world's most powerful drug-trafficking organization. |
