Attributes | Refers to the data that describes features |

Geocode | To use the Address Locater in ArcGIS in combination with a list of addresses to automaticallyy place these data points based in a road database |
Point Feature | Part of a feature class composed of point data, based on a single x, y location |
Polygon Feature | Part of a feature class composed of polygondata, based upon three or more x, y locations which are connected to one another in a closed shape |
Spatial Join | Data being joined together based on geographic location, rather than a shared data column |
Waypoint | Locations or positions of landmarks or other points of interests that can be taken with a gps unit |
Map | a visual representation of an area shown on a two dimensional surface. |
Orthongal Viewpoint | Viewing something from above (bird’s eye view) |
Political maps | Shows how humans have divided the Earth |
Physical | Shows land and water formations on earth’s surface. |

Cartography | The “science or art of making maps” |
Cartographer | The people who physically make the maps. |
Absolute location | acquired by using coordinate system to determine a referenced fixed point in space. |
Eastern Hemisphere | Are east of the prime meridian |
Equator | starting point for the lines of longitude and latitude. Divides the earth into northern and southern hemispheres. |
Geographic coordinate system | Establishes two sets of imaginary lines around the earth: Parallels, representing latitude, and meridians, representing longitude, forming a grid over the earth. |
International data line | imaginary date line that separates two calendar days located approximately 180° |
Latitude | Lines that run east and west along the earth’s surface. |
Longitude | Lines that run north and south along the earth’s surface. |
Meridians | Term used to describe lines of longitude. |
Parallels | Lines of latitude |
Prime Meridian | Measured at the 0 degree longitude. Starting point of the meridians. |
Relative location | A way of describing where an object is on an earth’s surface without giving absolute coordnants. |
Tropic of Cancer | Located a 23°30’ N Latitude Divides the tropics from the northern temperature zone. |
Tropic of Capricorn | Located at 23°30’ S Latitude divides the tropics from the southern temperature zone. |
Western Hemisphere | Are located west of the prime meridian to 180° longitude. |
