mania   persistently elevated, expansive or irritable mood lasting at least 1 wk (bipolar) most severe form

hypomania   state of mania that is not severe enought to occupational fnct or require hospitalization and no psychotic features (bipolar II)

mixed mood   criteria for both mania and major depression are met concurrently over a perod of 1 week  
🗑
catatonia   bizarre motor behavior or immobility  
🗑
delusional patient   atypical, well organized beliefs yet not explained by evidence or culture. Many reflect lit. such as the Bible, poetry, novels, historical and political events

rapid cycling   at least 4 episodes of mood disturance during a period of 1 year  
🗑
continuation phase   over several months, goal is to maintain a normal mood state and prevent relapse  
🗑
anxiety   apprehension of danger, and dread accompanied by restlessess, tension, tachycardia, and dyspnea unattached to a clearly identifiable stimulus

OCD   obsessive compulsive disorder- excessive bhvr such as hand washing may temporarily relieve the tension brought about by the obsessions  
🗑
common obsessions of OCD include   fears of germs, fear of harm to self or others, excessive concern for orderliness, fear of making a mistake, fears of social embarrassment, constant thoughts of a number, sound or word

Common behaviors for pts with OCD   handwashing & excessive cleanliness of skin, chcking and rechcking or appliances to assure they are turned off, doors, to make sure they are locked, counting to a specific number repeatedly, arranging items in a rigid specific order, hoarding  
🗑
PTSD   pts relive traumatic event over/over to point of becoming emotionally numb, experience chronic anxiety, exaggerated startle response, trouble w concentration on tasks, nightmares, insomnia  
🗑
3 categories of panic attack   unexpected (come out of blue and for no specific reason) situationally bound - situational such as when drving over bridge or going to dentist situationally predisposed - indvdl may have attacks, but they are not consistent
