| show | 茂名作為地名最早用於隋朝開皇十八年（598年），中央政府於羅州增設縣治，以道教先驅潘茂名之名命名。據《茂名縣誌》記載，潘茂名於西晉太熙元年(290年)農曆三月二十四日生於高州根子鎮潘坡村。相傳潘茂名一生心懷天下百姓，懸壺濟世，行醫為民。他淡泊名利，不喜爵祿，朝廷三召而不至；他不貪財帛，施醫贈藥，惠及桑梓；碰到瘟疫肆虐，他潛心研丹，冒死試藥，止疫安民，深得嶺南民眾敬仰，又受到朝廷讚揚。為表彰潘茂名的功德，朝廷以其名設立茂名縣，唐貞觀八年(公元六百三十四年)，又以其姓設置潘州，治茂名縣，並沿革至今。

| show | 陽江的名稱來源於流經陽江的母親河——「漠陽江」，而漠陽江的名稱又源「莫陽」，陽江最早叫「莫陽」。因為陽江古時候屬於古越，居住的多是越人。古越語中，「牛」為「莫」，（陽江話現在稱「牛」還叫「牛咩」）；「羊」越語為「陽」，和太陽的「陽」。「莫陽」就是牛羊的意思，據此推測古代的陽江曾是牛羊聚居的地方，或者是牛羊集市。而漠陽江江邊現有一村，叫牛場村。陽江處於江之北，所以叫陽江。（中國古代地理立位，山北水南曰陰，山南水北曰陽）。隋大業二年（公元606年），陽江正式始為陽江縣。
