| 1. Satellite State | A satellite state is a political term for a country that is formally independent, but under heavy political and economic influence or control by another country. |
| 2. Cold War | Rivalry after World War II between the Soviet Union and its satellites and the democratic countries of the Western world, under the leadership of the United States. |
| 3. Iron Curtain | A barrier to understanding and the exchange of information and ideas created by ideological, political, and military hostility of one country toward another, especially such a barrier between the Soviet Union and its allies and other countries. |
| 4. Truman Doctrine | The policy of President Truman to provide military and economic aid to Greece and Turkey and, by extension, to any country threatened by Communism or any totalitarian ideology. |
| 5. Containment | An act or policy of restricting the territorial growth or ideological influence of another, especially a hostile nation. |
| 6. Marshall Plan | Foreign policy that offered economic aid to Western European countries after World War II. |
| 7. Berlin Airlift | Airlift in 1948 that supplied food and fuel to citizens of west Berlin when the Russians closed off land access to Berlin |
| 8. North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) | Military Alliance formed to counter Soviet expansion. |
| 9. Warsaw Pact | A military treaty and association of E European countries, formed in 1955 by the Soviet Union, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Hungary, Poland, and Romania. |
| 10. 38th Parallel | The dividing line of Korea. |
| 11. Limited War | A war in which the enemies do not seek the total destruction of the enemy, esp one in which nuclear weapons are deliberately not used. |
| 12. South East Asia Treaty Organization (SEATO) | Defensive alliance aimed at preventing communism aggression in Asia. |
| 13. Arms Race | Competition between countries to achieve superiority in quantity and quality of military arms. |
| 14. Mutually Assured Destruction | Policy in which the United States and the Soviet Union hoped to deter nuclear war by building enough weapons to destroy one another. |
| 15. Massive Retaliation | Policy of threatening to use massive force in response to aggression. |
| 16. Brinkmanship | Belief that only by going into the brink of war could the U.S. protect itself against communist aggression. |
| 17. Nationalize | To place a resource under government control. |
| 18. Suez Crisis | Agreement between France and Great Britain to take control of the Suez Canal in 1956. |
| 19. Eisenhower Doctrine | Policy of Eisenhower that stated the the United States would use force to help any nation threatened by communism. |
| 20. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) | U.S. intelligence-gathering organization. |
| 21. National Aeronautics and Space Association (NASA) | Government agency that coordinates U.S. efforts in space. |
| 22. Red Scare | Fear that communists were working to destroy the American way of life. |
| 23. Smith Act | Law that made it unlawful to teach or advocate the violent overthrow of the United States government. |
| 24. House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) | Congressional committee that investigated possible subversive activities within the U.S. |
| 25. Hollywood Ten | Group of movie writers, directors, and producers who refused to answer HUAC questions about communist ties. |
| 26. Blacklist | List of persons who were not hired because of their suspected communist ties. |
| 27. McCarthyism | Negative catchword for extreme, reckless charges of disloyalty. |
