| Term | Definition |
| Primary | economic activities which involve working directly with the Earth's rocks, soils and waters. |
| Secondary | economic activities which involve making or manufacturing something. |
| Tertiary | economic activities which involve providing a service that is useful to people. |
| Natural resource | things provided by nature which are useful to people. |
| Renewable resource | can be used over and over again. |
| Non-renewable resource | something that cannot be replaced once used (e.g. oil gas and coal) |
| Sustainable exploitation | resources are managed so that future generations will be able to use those resources. |
| Exploitation | To make full use of something and get benefit from it. |
| Irrigation | artificial watering of land. |
| Raised bog | Deep bog, found in the midlands, 8 metres deep. |
| Blanket bog | Shallow bod, found along the west coast, 3-4 metres deep. |
| Ditcher | used to dig drains to dry out the bog. |
| Grader | used to level the bog |
| Miller | harvest the peat by scraping a loose this layer on top of the bog. |
| Harrow | used to dry out the peat on the surface. |
| Ridger | gathers the loose dry peat into ridges. |
| Depletion | to decrease or reduce the quantity of something. |

| Mixed farm | a farm that grows crops and raises animals |
| Net mesh size | the size of the holes in a fishing net |
| Overfishing | to fish so much that fish stocks are reduced. |
| Tillage | the production of crops. |
