Term | Definition |
Model | A system or thing used as an example to follow or imitate. |
Atom | A basic unit of a chemical element. |
Nucleus | The positively charged central core of an atom, consisting of protons and neutrons and containing nearly all its mass. |
Proton | A stable subatomic particle occurring in all atomic nuclei, with a positive electric charge equal in magnitude to that of an electron but of opposite sign. |
Electron | A stable subatomic particle with a charge of negative found in all atoms. |
Atomic Number | Number of protons in the nucleus of an atom. |
Atomic Symbol | The number of protons or electrons normally found in an atom |
Nuclear Symbol | Shows the chemical symbol, the mass number and the atomic number of the isotope |
Chemical Symbol | Symbols in the periodic table. |
Subatomic Particle | Particle smaller than an atom. |
Molecule | a group of atoms bonded together, representing the smallest fundamental unit of a chemical compound that can take part in a chemical reaction. |
Lewis Structure | Diagrams that show the bonding between atoms of a molecule and the lone pairs of electrons that may exist in the molecule. |
Bohr Model | Electrons orbit the nucleus at set distances. |
Electron Shell | The electrons in the outermost occupied shell (or shells) determine the chemical properties of the atom; it is called the valence shell. Each shell consists of one or more subshells, and each subshell consists of one or more atomic orbitals. |
Valence Electron | An electron that is associated with an atom, and that can participate in the formation of a chemical bond; in a single covalent bond, both atoms in the bond contribute one valence electron in order to form a shared pair. |
Matter | That which occupies space and possesses rest mass |
