| crude birth rate: | the number of live births per 1000 population |
| crude death rate: | the number of deaths per 1000 population |
| demography: | the study of populations, including patterns and trends in population data |
| emigration: | the movement of people out of a country |
| ethnically diverse: | describes a population composed of people from different ethnic backgrounds or origins |
| fertility rate: | the average number of babies born to women during their reproductive years |
| immigration: | the movement of people into a country |
| Indigenous people: | the descendants of the original inhabitants of an area |
| infant mortality rate: | the number of deaths per 1000 babies under one year of age |
| interstate migration: | the movement of people from one state of Australia to another |
| intrastate migration: | the movement of people from one location to another within a state of Australia |
| migration: | the permanent or semi-permanent movement of people from one location to another |
| natural increase: | the excess of births over deaths, usually expressed as a percentage |
| net overseas migration: | the number of people migrating to a country minus the number of people emigrating to live in other countries; it is expressed as a percentage of the total population |
| population density: | the number of people living in a given area, usually a square kilometre |
| population pyramid: | set of bar graphs that show the age and sex distribution of a population |
| referendum: | a process through which change can be made to the Constitution, in which electors vote on a particular change |
| refugee: | a person who, owing to religious persecution or political troubles, seeks shelter or protection in a foreign country |
| replacement rate: | a total fertility rate of 2.1. When a population reaches this level, it will remain stable (assuming no immigration or emigration takes place). |
| rural settlement: | site where most of the people are engaged in primary industry, such as farming, fishing or mining |
| settlement: | a group of people living in one place or location |
| standard of living: | the amount of goods and services, mainly food, clothing, housing, education and health, that is available for use in the community per head of population |
| sustainable development: | development that meets the needs of the present population without endangering the ability of future generations to meet their own needs |
| urban settlement: | site where most of the population is engaged in tertiary industries, such as commerce, administration and transport |
