| Term | Definition |
| House of Representatives - representation based on population | There are 435 representatives and 5 nonvoting delegates in the House. The nonvoting are from Puerto Rico, D.C., Am. Samoa, Guam, and the Virgin Islands. You must be at least 25 years old. The term for a representative is two years with no term limit. |
| Senate - 2 senators per state | There are 100 members of the Senate. You must be at least 30 years old. Senators are elected to 6 year terms with no term limit. |
| How a Bill becomes a law - Introduction | Most bills begin as similar proposals in the House and the Senate. * A bill is introduced in the House of Representatives or in the Senate. |
| How a Bill becomes a law - Committee Action | A committee holds hearings, makes changes, and recommends passage. * The bill is referred to the House committee or too the Senate committee. |
| How a Bill becomes a law - Floor action | All bills must go through the House and the Senate before reaching the president. *The House and Senate debate and both pass their form of the bill. House and Senate members confer and reach a compromise on a single bill. It is approved by both. |
| Enactment into Law - The President | The president either signs a bill into law or vetoes it. |
