| Term | Definition |
| threatened miscarriage | Pregnant patient has mild cramping, slight bleeding, no passage of tissue or dilation |
| inevitable miscarriage | Pregnant patient has moderate amount of bleeding, mild to severe cramping with cervical dilation, but no passage of tissue |
| incomplete miscarriage | Pregnant patient has heavy amount of bleeding, severe cramping with cervical dilation, and some passage of tissue |
| complete miscarriage | Pregnant patient has passed tissue through dilated cervix, but bleeding has now slight and cramping is subsiding and cervix has re-closed. |
| missed miscarriage | Pregnant patient has no uterine growth in several weeks and no fetal heart beat, but no cramping or bleeding; cervix remains closed. |
| recurrent miscarriage | 3 or more pregnancies lost prior to 20 weeks gestation |
| surgical intervention for retained products of conception | D&C (dilation & curettage) |
