| conflict | a struggle between opposing forces |
| plot | the series of events in a story; Most stories have five stages: exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution |
| point of view | refers to how a writer chooses to narrate a story; When a story is told from the first-person, the narrator is a character in the story and uses pronouns such as I, me, and us. In a story told from third-person, the narrator is not in the story. |
| sensory details | words or phrases that appeal to the reader's senses of sight, hearing, touch, smell, and taste. |
| suspense | a feeling of growing tension or excitement experienced by a reader. It makes a reader curious about the outcome of the story. A writer creates this by raising questions in the reader's mind. |
